Medical Council Goes Live on Doctor Registration System

The purpose of the Medical Council is to protect the public in its dealings with medical practitioners. It safeguards the quality of the patient-doctor relationship by supporting and regulating medical practitioners, setting standards for education, training and competence, establishing a Register and investigating complaints against medical practitioners.

The new system for the country's 17,000 doctors to register membership online will help the Medical Council to meet its requirements under Irelands Medical Practitioners Bill 2007, with the objective of protecting and informing the public in its dealings with medical practitioners. The Bill introduced new measures for the registration and control of medical practitioners and has significantly changed the membership and functions of the Medical Council.

Replacing paper-based methods, the new database allows applications to be entered online along with online payments and requests for a Certificate of Good Standing, which doctors need to continue practicing. The iSOFT Business Solutions web-enabled development supports registration, retention, register maintenance, and the online payments processing. The system also features a "my page" facility for individual doctors.

"Integrated Business Software and Solutions delivered on its promise of a simplified installation process," said Jim McDermott, Head of IT at the Medical Council. "While we've only been live on the system for a short time, we're starting to see reductions in IT costs and an improved ability to manage our organisation to help meet evolving regulations. Having software systems that help us unify and simplify many complex processes reduces administrative time, which ultimately helps us reduce costs."

"Integrated Business Software and Solutions worked closely with the Medical Council throughout this implementation to help deliver a smooth transition to the new system," said Eamonn Morris, Managing Director for Integrated Business Software and Solutions. "Moving to a modern, unified system helps public sector organisations improve transparency and processes, which enables them to be more accountable and responsive."

Mr Morris continues, "Integrated Business Software and Solutions has been providing off-the-shelf and custom software solutions for over 30 years. These solutions have enabled our customers to gain significant competitive advantage, streamline business process flows, increase efficiency and productivity and produces significant cost savings. We have developed a reputation for delivering our projects in partnership with our customer's on-time, within budget and to specification."
